We stopped for a return trip to
Santosoussos. Our server was really
disappointed to see us…left for about ten minutes, then we left.
Having walked by the New York Bagel Deli on the way in we stopped in
on the way out. I figured it was going to be a big national chain
but there is one…the one we’re standing in.

More technologically flashy and clean than any NY Deli I’ve seen, the tv menus are loaded with a lot of options, mostly variations on the classics. It’s counter style service but they did run everything out to the table when it was ready to go. The gentleman at the register struck me as an owner type, really engaged and super excited about their offerings and our presence. We got a couple of bagels to go for the next morning, a couple of sandwiches and a couple of salads.
While we were waiting, someone from the back brought us a little
basket of fries, letting us know they would soon be adding burgers
and fries on the menu. Not sure how the burgers would be but the
fries are a coated version with healthy seasoning. A nice gesture. |

The bagels were consumed the next morning and I don’t know that I have any idea of what constitutes an authentic NY bagel…but these had a dense texture and more chew than most others I’ve had from ‘round here. Didn’t try the blueberry but the everything bagel had enough stuff clinging to it that it was shedding fiercely.
The sandwiches weren’t as good as I was hoping. The Wall Street
Journal is a traditional Reuben with
hot corned beef, sauerkraut, melted Swiss and Russian dressing on
grilled rye, Something about the corned beef left the sandwich
really flat, which surprised me as they serve Boar’s Head which I’ve
found to have depth in the flavor department. Maybe its just not the
case for the corned beef. My sandwich was the New Yorker: Corned
beef, pastrami, turkey, coleslaw and Russian dressing on a roll.
There seemed to be too much bread for the innards to really shine.

The tater salad had a healthy dose of sweet but not so much it made it unappetizing and the mac salad was more savory but not completely, more of a balance between the two.
The deli already won the day by serving us…and did fairly well on
the food front but didn’t hit any standing doubles. |
